showa Today we had to go out of our beds early to be on time for the 4 years koi harvest high in the mountains. Several of my friends where very nervous because they had the change to help and catch some big koi between 74 to 83 cm. You maybe think that this would be a very easy job but the truth is quite different. First of all it was quite cold up there and the water was around 10 degree. It was for my friends not so easy to catch the koi and get them in a big blue bowl. The men in charge of the japanese staff was looking several times with closed eyes and where nervous too. But more important we had them save in the water tanks on the truck. The excitement was very high for my friends and they where surprised about the strength of the koi. But the S.F.F. farm staff had a second big mud pond to do. Here we where getting some lessons how you should do this.

The speed and organization to get more then 20 big 4 year koi out of the pond was a complete surprise. This fantastic team have done this in less then 40 minutes without stressing the koi at all. We where all amazed by this. Then we where going quick back to the farm where another team was ready to compare the koi with their picture book and measure the koi at the same time. Again this was going so smoothly. The whole day their where things happening and in the afternoon their where coming some more customer koi in. Later on the day they where preparing and selecting koi for the Hiroshima koi show next week. This means selecting and measuring the koi and photograph them at the same time. For all of us this was the high light of the week and need to say a big thank you to Sakai koi farm and staff to allow us to help them. Off course we must not forget our driver Danny from  Dannys koi cafe that was getting the nickname turbo bob because he can drive so fast through the mountains and have scared many of us including his partner Mie that was afraid that we would end up in a mud pond. But Danny is a save and fast driver. Tomorrow we will visit with them a few other breeders and will update you soon with some more pictures.

 Regards,
